Tipton Pool Builders, in Knoxville, TN explain whether a waterfall is a DIY project

If you’ve ever seen a swimming pool with a rock waterfall you know how elegant and beautiful they are. Have you ever wondered, though if adding this accessory was a do it yourself project or if you’d want to work with a swimming pool contractor from Tipton Pool Builders to realize that dream?

There are many items you will want to have on hand before you decide to jump into the project and they include:

  • A metal lathe
  • Mortar
  • A wheelbarrow
  • Stone
  • Latex paint
  • Boat dock foamrock waterfall
  • Above-average carpentry skills.

Even if you’re equipped with the skills and materials, we don’t advise undertaking the project unless you have a clear idea as to what the finished project will look like.

Here is what goes into a waterfall construction project: :

  1. Build a base for it to sit upon. If it will be close to the ground, pour a concrete block foundation. If the waterfall isn’t going to be at ground level you can construct it with a treated wood foundation.
  2. Once the foundation is set, line the structure with a heavy pond liner that fits snugly into the base.
  3. The waterfall’s water return line should be hidden to help with pool aesthetics.
  4. Once the water return is placed, set the foam dock pieces in place.
  5. If you want decorative stones leave an area at the waterfall lip that can withstand the constant cascade of water.
  6. Plants and other landscaping items will soften the look of the rock foundation and make it appear to blend more naturally into the surroundings.
  7. Consider the type of lighting you want for the waterfall and place that.
  8. Wrap the structure with metal lathe for support.
  9. After the foam has been placed and dried, layer the mortar on the wire lathe to cover it for future build up.
  10. Add of mortar until the waterfall is the shape and height you desire. After that use your trowel to cut cracks into the mortar so it looks like your waterfall is made of weathered rocks.
  11. The final step in the project is to cover the formation with a latex exterior paint finish.

A rock waterfall project may not be for everyone to undertake without the assistance of a pool contractor, but if you have the skills try it on your own go ahead. If not, talk with your pool contractor for his advice and assistance.
