Tipton Pools contractors explain hot tub safety for children

Hot tubs are usually more popular in the winter than in the summer, but chances are there will still be cooler days and nights and times when you and your children just want to spend time in the hot tub instead of the swimming pool. This is an ideal way to spend time together, but the swimming pool and hot tub contractors from Tipton Pools want to offer some hot tub safety tips you might not have considered.

As with a swimming pool, the number one rule is constant supervision. Just as there is a “no running” or rough-hot tubhousing rule around the pool that should carry over to the hot tub or spa as well.  In a hot tub, make certain your children can safely sit on the seats without going under water, if they are too short or the water is too deep, ask your pool contractor for advice on making the seats child friendly.

Always be in close proximity to your children and don’t get involved in other activities. A house rule should be that the hot tub is covered and the cover is locked tightly when not in use.  The use of a cover for both your hot tub and your swimming pool shouldn’t be considered an option, but a necessity. A cover can keep curious children from falling in and can keep the water cleaner and debris-free.  Don’t purchase a hot tub or spa without making the investment in a cover at the same time.

If your child has long hair, it should always be tied in a ponytail or in a bun or the child should wear a swim cap. Long hair can be dangerous and lead to a suction injury.

Restrict the amount of time your children spend in the hot tub — because of the heat of the water — it can raise a child’s internal body temperature and this could be dangerous. If you’re going to be having children in the hot tub with you with any regularity, you may want to consider lowering the temperature of the water so everyone can enjoy it together. Set a timer and limit the amount of time spent in the hot tub — set a timer on the jets and when they go off, everyone understands it’s time to get out for a little while!
